"I played lots of basketball as a kid and into early adulthood. However, by the time my 30th birthday rolled around, I began to think that I should get into some formal exercise. My family’s history is riddled with health problems and I wanted to do what I could to ward them off--My father died of a heart attack in his late 60s and my mother had a history of strokes.
I signed up for a noontime exercise class at the Y three
times a week. That worked well for awhile, and then I got into running.
Eventually I got into running 5 or 6 days a week and took up hiking. My major
accomplishments with fitness include having hiked the 500 highest mountains in
New England, and the 100 highest during the winter months. It took over 30
years to accomplish those feats!
A few years ago, I had been reading more and more about how work on balance, core strength, and weight training are more important as one ages. I joined a local health club and attended regularly for a year and a half. I was doing resistance training on the machines and it seemed to be helping. The club kept track of my work which was amounting to lifting 800 to a million lbs. of weight a month! That seemed pretty good to me. A couple of years ago I was unfortunate to be involved in an auto accident and ended up with a subdural hematoma. I needed something beyond just running and hiking for exercise because I lost some functioning of my left side. I knew I needed close professional guidance so I did some research online. Home Bodies seemed to be the best company of them all. And it truly is, because the difference in results I have between my work at the health club and my home (well, office) training is night and day.
"I am really happy I made the choice and commitment I did and I see going forward that this is the way I’m gonna be. This program is the most intense thing I’ve ever done. Some days don’t think I could do it because of feeling tired, etc. but I’m always happy at the end that I did it."
Working with a Home Bodies trainer is so convenient. Gina comes right to my office usually during the morning or midday. I have noted the difference myself and family and friends have as well. My grandson certainly isn’t getting any lighter, and I can lift him with ease, even with one hand if need be. For a guy my age, this is highly unusual!
When I started, my primary goal was lose weight off my stomach and regain full use of my left side. As a side note, I have no cartilage in my knee and have had three knee surgeries over the years. Physical therapists always told me to strengthen the muscles around the knee and I want to be able to run for a long time--so keeping my knees healthy was a goal, too. I also had chronic low back issues that are tremendously improved now. I couldn’t sleep due to the pain and now it’s so much better. I actually cut back on my running when I started the personal training visits and in spite of that I am lighter and in the best shape of my life at this time. I lost 10 lbs. of bodyfat since we started. I used to have to wear an industrial knee brace to jog, do yard work or exercise. Now it just sits at home gathering dust. The commitment isn’t easy but it really is worthwhile.
My program does everything that I want it to do. I can easily maintain what I want in terms of appearance. During my sessions, I have a great feeling of accomplishment. I also have really notice my increased core strength with everything I do, in the gym and also at home in daily life. My trainer is tough, but encouraging. She shows me the proper technique. She is positive and provides lots of feedback for the things that I find difficult. This is very motivating.
I keep a food log and that helps me concentrate on what I’m eating every day. After all, I don’t want to put any of the weight back on! Gina started my diet with the way I was currently eating, and each month or two she asks me to focus on something new all the while maintaining the changes I have already made. I don’t even miss bread; I never thought I’d say that! Recently my wife observed, “We don’t even have bread in the house anymore.” I used to have bread and wine every time we went out to eat. Now it’s very rare. When I eat enough protein and fruit, the cravings are minimal. My self-discipline has really improved in dealing with dietary issues. I even logged while on vacation! I truly am a changed man!
If you are thinking about getting a trainer--Just do it. It will improve how you feel, look, and it will improve your health, both mentally and physically.
