Turkey Burgers On The Grill

Ready, Set, Grill! We held the first barbecue of the season this weekend. Even though we grill all winter — and luckily it was a mild one this year, though we’ve been out there in storms and freezing temps as well — there’s nothing quite like the first burgers and dogs of the year.

However, for anyone who’s trying to maintain a healthy diet, grilling season can be either boring (chicken breasts done every-which-way can still be monotonous) or torture (you eat the salads while everyone else eats the burgers and dogs). Here’s an alternative burger that keeps your eye on the prize by using ground turkey that’s lower in fat than ground beef. You can enjoy it on one of the many whole grain buns that are on the market now, or on a bed of lettuce. Use ground turkey, not ground turkey breast, which does not have enough fat to hold the burger together on the grill.

Turkey Burgers
(Adapted from Weight Watchers Magazine)

½ lb ground turkey (or ground chicken)
1½ T chopped onion
1 T parsley
½ t chili powder
¼ t salt
1/8 t dried oregano
dash of Worcestershire
1 garlic clove, minced
cooking spray

Preheat grill. Combine all the ingredients through the garlic. Add the egg white and stir until well blended. Divide into 2 portions.

Place burgers on grill. Cook burgers 5 minutes on each side. Serves 2.
