Jenny Legan is Home Bodies' Personal Trainer to Portsmouth, Rye NH, York ME and surrounding areas.


"I became seriously involved in fitness as a teenager. It was during this time that I began to casually contemplate fitness as a possible career path. I have been an athlete for most of my life, including 12 years as a gymnast, which I'm currently still involved in. I have also spent a great deal of time involved in distance running, through participation in cross country and various road races.


However, in my late teens, my athletic lifestyle came to a sudden halt after being diagnosed with Cushing's Disease, which was responsible for a sudden 70 pound weight gain that due to excess production of the stress hormone cortisol. After many challenging years of multiple treatments, I'm in remission from the disease. However, I've not forgotten the time I spent as an overweight individual.

Although I have lost the weight, I have not lost the tremendous amount of empathy and compassion I have for those struggling with weight issues. After my experience, there was no question in my mind that I was meant to be involved in the fitness field, and I ultimately became certified as a personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise.



I look forward to working with a broad range of clients from all different backgrounds and with different goals. Being an athlete most of my life, I can relate to individuals who are seeking to reach ambitious fitness goals, for which I'm eager to help my clients achieve. I also realize that there are those out there who are simply wanting to improve their health and often may even still be coping with ongoing medical challenges. I'm prepared to support my clients in the implementation of a fitness program that takes into consideration all the unique needs of the individual, ultimately enhancing one's quality of life.

In order for optimal fitness to be achieved, I've found strength training to be the most beneficial aspect of any program. This can be a challenge concept for many to grasp, especially women who have lived in fear of developing a bulky, masculine, physique. I'm determined to do my part to encourage more women to look to strength training, rather than excessive amounts of cardio, to accomplish their goals.

However, even with strength training being the bedrock of an effective fitness program, the right diet can't be overlooked. One does not achieve a high level of fitness through exercise alone--a proper diet is simply essential. My ongoing studies and extensive interest and knowledge in Nutritional Sciences is a great complement to the fitness advice I have to offer clients.

The third part of the fitness equation is the right mindset, which is the glue that holds everything together and ensures that a healthy lifestyle is embraced over the long run. I promise to coach you in this area so that you are able to execute on the fitness and nutrition plan we set together."

"As a college athlete, I am busy with a different sport every season. I have been working with Jenny for over a year to improve my fitness level and improve my 'game' within the several different sports I participate in.

Working with Jenny has enabled me to understand how my body works best and she has given me the tools to achieve my athletic goals. Jenny puts a great amount of effort into helping me improve my nutrition, which I never realized was so crucial to enhancing my fitness level. The approach that Jenny uses is to educate her clients about the right way to eat, which is not about weight loss, but about improving the health, and in my case, better performance in sports. Peak performance, is not only important to me as an athlete, but also in the hectic, day-to-day activities of school.

When I first started to look for a personal trainer that could help me become a better athlete above and beyond what my coaches could offer me, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a trainer that would be available for as little or as much help as I needed. Luckily, Jenny is great because she is flexible in understanding my constantly changing needs due to each sports season. During gymnastics, for example, the competitive season happens in the winter months. During a busy time like this, Jenny mostly just 'checks in' with me every two to six weeks. But, in the spring, during track and field season, we will meet more often so that she will be present for a workout routine that she has designed to complement my track and field practices.
