How to Practice Visualization

by Kathryn Payne, Home Bodies trainer to greater Worcester, MA

In your mind’s eye, visualize yourself as you want to see yourself, realistically. In other words, how will you look 10 lbs. lighter instead of the 30 lbs. you eventually think you should lose…this is an attainable goal. Imagine how you will feel with your clothes fitting better, having more energy, sleeping better, or off your blood pressure meds. Do you believe you can achieve these goals? Be honest in your assessment of your strengths and weaknesses.

Accompanied with positive self talk, proper instruction in your exercise program and better food choices, you can’t miss! Positive self talk is an invaluable tool. It simply consists of removing those 'old tapes' in your mind about your past failures and replacing them with new, more positive tapes. Try this for example, 'I am worth this hard work' or, 'No one can decide for me if I fail or succeed, I get to do that, I am in control of what I do and what goes into my mouth!' It will become a habit for you, a good one, instead of negative self talk that most likely will sabotage your goals.

Whether you agree with these concepts or not, there is a good chance that negative thinking about your past failures are working against your efforts to achieve your fitness goals.

So, who do you think you are, anyway? Hopefully, you will 'renew your mind,' so to speak, and be on your way to the new you, you truly are!
